What is Taizé prayer?
Taizé is a place in France, the home of an international, ecumenical religious community. The prayer form which has spread throughout the world from Taizé is meditative in character, using singing, scripture, silence, intercessions, icons, the cross and candlelight to draw us into an experience of God's love.
The music of Taizé prayer generally consists of short songs, repeated again and again to foster meditation. Using just a few words, such songs express a basic reality of faith and are quickly grasped by the mind. As the words are sung over many times, this reality gradually penetrates the whole being. Meditative singing thus becomes a way of listening to God. It allows everyone to take part in a time of prayer together and to remain together in attentive waiting on God, without having to fix the length of time too exactly. Various languages, including Latin, are often used in the singing.
The experience of Taizé prayer commonly brings peace, comfort and confidence.
